As an analyst, “clarity” is one of the things in life you appreciate most – however, as you may know in your projects, it is hardest to achieve. Project teams spend hours and hours discussing concepts that are not clearly defined, and these discussions are often time-consuming – and devastating for getting to the true questions that must be tackled.
Many years ago, data modeling was introduced as a technique to optimize database design. Today the techniques that were developed back then can be used efficiently in many projects. In data modeling, we try to develop a representation of the things that matter most to the business. These things are stored and tracked by the business and should be clearly defined.
That’s what data modeling is all about.
One of the best techniques to do this is building an entity-relationship diagram. And that’s exactly the model that we’ll introduce in this course.
Reveal the complexity of data
Compared to some other techniques in business analysis, data modeling is straightforward. To build even the most complex and large data models, we only need three basic elements: entity types, attribute types and relationships.
But this simplicity hides the true power of the entity relationships diagram. The complexity lies not within the elements but in how those elements are used in practice.
