Bachelor Thesis/Internship @ Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (BBEPP) – Ghent (Belgium)
Mapping European Technology Infrastructures & Industrial Needs for Scale-Up
Available: preferable from June/July 2026
Project description
The thesis or internship will be part of an Horizon Europe project focussing on enhancing Technology Infrastructures (TIs) that facilitate the acceleration of green transitions within the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.
Technology Infrastructures (pilot & demo facilities and their services) are essential to help start-ups/SMEs to scale up innovations from a low Technology Readiness level(TRL 4) to a higher TRL. This thesis/ internship work will mainly focussing on creating a structured overview of relevant TIs and analysing what start-ups/SMEs needs are, being a user of such TIs.
Main tasks and outcome
Collect and structure information on European TIs and which type of service they are offering.
Create simple visuals (e.g., service coverage matrix, geographic overview).
Map potential users (start-ups/SMEs).
Design a short survey/interview guide.
Analyse needs and access barriers (cost, lead time, contracting/IP, logistics, etc.) and summarise gaps recommendations in the form of a report.
What you will learn
How European pilot & demo infrastructures support industrial scale-up (TRL 4–8) in chemistry and biotechnology.
Practical skills in ecosystem mapping, data structuring, and evidence-based analysis.
Survey/interview design, stakeholder research, and turning insights into actionable recommendations.
Exposure to a European innovation network through a Horizon Europe Project.
Profile
We are looking for a bachelor student:
Interest in innovation ecosystems and stakeholder engagement.
You are studying for a degree in bio-engineering, chemistry, communication, marketing, data analysis.
Strong analytical skills.
Good command of MS Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Very good English writing skills
Duration: 5–6 months (flexible) | Location: Ghent, hybrid possible
