Professor Eco-modelling

ITG | Anvers | Durée indéterminée, Temps plein

En ligne depuis 27 jours sur

The Eco-Epidemiology Group of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, where the post holder will be located, aims to understand the dynamics of, and interactions between infectious diseases, and to develop and evaluate strategies for prevention and sustainable control. Recognizing that pathogen-, vector-, human-, and animal host populations interact with each other and with the environment, we take a whole system approach. We do this by innovative and interdisciplinary research, merging field epidemiology and ecology with lab-based research and modelling. Our current focus is on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and malaria, with specific emphasis on vector-borne diseases, zoonoses, and parasite (co-)infections.

We are seeking an outstanding PhD-level scientist with experience in developing and applying state-of-the-art mathematical models to complex ecosystems. Research could span from the pathogen interactions within individual hosts, to the dynamics of pathogens and their vectors across time-space scales, to the eco-epidemiology of infectious diseases at population-level, including the impact of ecological change and of interventions. The focus of the Unit will be on translational modelling, with a strong link with the field in the tropics. He/she will be expected to develop a comprehensive, competitive and innovative research programme, complementary to the research lines within the Eco-Epidemiology Group, and closely linked to our training and capacity strengthening activities.

Professor Eco-modelling

Description de la fonction

  • You will set up and conduct innovative research in the field of ecomodelling of infectious diseases, with the aim to understand their dynamics and interactions at the human-animal-ecosystem interface and to improve their prevention and control.
  • You will develop advanced analytical methods as well as computational tools for the analysis of complex ecoepidemiological data.
  • You will be based in the EcoEpidemiology group, but will collaborate closely with other units in the Department of Biomedical Sciences as well as with the Departments of Public Health and Clinical Sciences, within the Eco-Health theme.
  • You will perform project or group-overarching modelling of large/complex datasets, to link available data across studies and groups, in close collaboration with internal and external partners.
  • You will take up teaching and training in the field of ecomodelling and statistics at postgraduate, Master and PhD level as well as in specialized short courses at ITM. You will contribute to the development of new teaching modules, including distant and blended learning.
  • You will provide methodological advice/statistical support within the Department of Biomedical Sciences, but also interdepartmentally in close coordination with other methodological/statistical experts at ITM and externally.
  • You have to acquire internal and external funding and build up international reputation and visibility.
  • You provide expert advice to national and international bodies/stakeholders in the field of ecomodelling of infectious diseases.
  • You will take up hierarchic responsibilities regarding management, safety and quality.
  • You contribute to the vision, strategies and departmental and institutional policy development.

  • You have a doctoral degree in a quantitatively oriented field such as applied mathematics, mathematical biology, epidemiology, biostatistics, or related disciplines.
  • You have a strong academic track record in the field of eco-modelling of infectious diseases, including successful grant writing and PhD supervision.
  • You have a sound knowledge of, and proven work experience with mathematical modelling and buildingdeterministic, stochastic, individual-based models and Bayesian statistics, as well as with programming computational tools for end-users.
  • Experience with all steps of developing and applying mathematical models to the pathogen-vector-host-environment interface (from generating hypotheses, developing models, programming simulations, analysing data, to communicating results), will be an asset.
  • Experience in teaching or training in the field of eco-modelling, eco-epidemiology, and/or biostatistics; skills and experience with digital teaching formats are assets.
  • Working experience in/with tropical and/or low- and middle-income countries is an asset.
  • A strong interest in collaborative research and a track record in successful collaborative research with other disciplines.
  • You are fluent in English, written and spoken. Active knowledge of Dutch and French is desirable; if not, willingness to acquire a working level of knowledge of both is requested. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.

  • A stimulating, international and committed working environment in a historical but thriving city.
  • A fulltime tenure appointment in the initial rank of assistant, associate or (full) professor, depending on your qualifications.
  • Core support in terms of research staff, facilities and international collaboration.
  • A salary according to the scale of the ITM and the Flemish Universities.
  • Additional benefits including extra-legal pension plan, public transport or bike compensation, meal vouchers.
