Brief presentation
SCK•CEN is one of the largest research institutions in Belgium. Every day, more than 700 employees dedicate themselves to developing peaceful applications of radioactivity. Our developments have already resulted in a long list of innovative and forward-looking applications for the medical world, industry and the energy sector. We are renowned for our expertise world-wide.
In the course of our work, there are three main research topics:

  • The safety of nuclear installations
  • The well-considered management of radioactive waste
  • Human and environmental protection against ionising radiation
SCK•CEN collaborates with numerous research partners both at home and abroad.
The work performed by SCK•CEN has a direct effect upon various aspects of our daily life. Besides our work as a research centre, we also organise training courses and offer specialist services including  consultancy.

Project leader

Job description

As a project leader:

  • You manage all projects related to the development of research reactor fuels and give your support in other nuclear fuel projects. This requires smooth interactions with other internal departments within the Belgian Reactor 2 group (for instance irradiation programmes), the Fuel Materials group and the hot lab (for instance post irradiation studies);
  • you give your input to the Fund Manager about project progress on a financial and technical level and take care of the implementation;
  • you carry out your marketing actions and therefore look for opportunities in developing research reactor fuels and, on a broader scale, for irradiation projects of fuels in BR2; 
  • you take initiatives jointly with the Fund Manager and in accordance with the strategic choices;
  • you work closely with the Business Development & Support unit to develop new business and conclude related contracts.


  • Master’s degree in Science, Master’s degree in Engineering or PhD in Science;
  • some experience in project management, including financial management, is required;
  • experience in managing irradiation projects is a strong asset;
  • technical knowledge of fuels, preferably research reactor fuels, is a significant added value;
  • a network in the nuclear research community in the US is an asset;
  • flexible and willing to travel regularly in Europe and the US for short periods of time;
  • good communication and commercial skills;
  • excellent knowledge of English, good knowledge of Dutch and French.
