Junior research manager Environment & sustainable development

Job description

The position includes two distinctive roles.

The first role (50%), overall support to IMDO, includes the following tasks:

  • In collaboration with other IMDO staff members and involved professors you professionally organise and supervise research and education projects within the domain of Environment and Sustainable Development: for example identifying opportunities, drafting project proposals, planning and financing, starting up new projects and managing the progress of projects in relation to predefined objectives;
  • You support IMDO project-wise in its research, education and services: developing, planning, coordinating and writing multi and interdisciplinary research projects in the field of Environment and Sustainable Development;
  • You implement and update strategic objectives and policies of IMDO into concrete initiatives at institutional level within the domain of Environment and Sustainable Development;
  • You disseminate research results from IMDO and you create networks within the domain of Environment and Sustainable Development, you maintain good relations with other organizations and industrial partners, you explore new contacts and partnerships;
  • You support the integration of project results in policy planning and implementation;
  • You coordinate valorization and communication activities;
  • You organize events; online and physically;
  • Your assignments are in line with the university’s policies.

The 2nd role (50%) supports the FWO-SBO project TURQUOISE. The TURQUOISE project focuses on blue-green solutions for drought risk management in Flanders

  • You support the FWO-SBO project TURQUOISE. The project is a collaboration between Uantwerp, KULeuven and ILVO.
  • TURQUOISE examines the effectiveness of blue-green measures in the battle against droughts and floods. TURQUOISE therefore aims to develop a decision support framework to increase the effectiveness and implementation rate of blue-green measures.
  • TURQUOISE has received the support of approximately 30 organisations that are active in water policy, spatial planning, nature conservation, agriculture, etc.
  • You support the general project operation (communication with end users, organisation of events and workshops).
  • You also focus on the valorisation and communication of the research results. You actively promote TURQUOISE on events and activities.


  • You have a Master degree with a strong demonstrable link to Environment and Sustainable Development or have equivalent competences gained through prior work experience.
  • You hold a PhD or have experience in a research environment and with project management.
  • You have experience in writing and acquiring research funding, preferably in a European or cross-domain context.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research is a plus.
  • You are proficient in MS Office.
  • You are experienced with social media and the digital communication of research results.
  • You have excellent oral and written knowledge of Dutch and English.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have strong skills in planning and organisation, and you can work independently.


  • We offer a temporary contract with an expected end date in 2 years.
  • The planned start date is January, 1st, 2022.
  • You will receive a gross monthly salary within pay band 7.1-9.1 of the pay scales of the Administrative and Technical Staff. Your entry-level grade (usually grade 7) depends on your relevant professional experience. If you work part time, your salary is calculated proportionally on the basis of your employment percentage.
  • You will receive meal vouchers, ecocheques, group insurance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
  • We offer flexible working hours.
  • You will have 40 days of annual leave and collective leave for 1 week when the university is closed, between Christmas and New Year.
  • You will do most of your work at Groenenborger Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
