Job description

Responsible for maintaining personal contact with the Dutch language media, advising the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) and Deputy Public Affairs Officer (DPAO) on th content and trends among Belgian policy makers, based on daily monitoring of Belgian media and aforementioned personal contacts.  Provides assistance to Belgian journalists traveling to the U.S.  Assists the PAO and DPAO to handle, screen, and evaluate all requests for interviews of Embassy officers and visiting USG oficials. Writes/translates press releases as needed.  
Monitors and reports on French-language media in absence of colleague who usually covers that portfolio.


Education:  University degree in liberal arts, political science, economics, journalism, or international relations.
Experience: Minimum 4 years of experience in press, television, public relations, public policy, international affairs, and/or government.
Language Skills: Level IV (fluency) in English, Dutch, and French
Job Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of Belgium’s political, economic, social and educational structure, institutions, political parties and cultural movements, historic development and key figures in the mass media, the professions, military, government, cultural, educational, labor and business circles. Special emphasis on the Flemish side. Thorough knowledge of media and public relations techniques.
Skills and Abilities: Personal standing and prestige among media personnel, ability to develop and maintain extensive high level contacts.

Ability to advise American Foreign Service Officers on information programs, on trends and reaction in the media, and on the selection and release of informational materials to the public and news media.
Sound perception of political nuances and sensitivities both of U.S. and host country policies and customs, and ability to represent U.S. interests—especially to the Dutch-speaking community.
Ability, initiative and imagination in planning and producing informational materials and programs.
Computer and Internet skills to handle all word processing needs, email, Internet searches, and basic computer trouble shooting.
