General Purpose Worker - Operations & Maintenance

BWSC is an engineering and contracting company originating from the Danish B&W organisation. We are project-oriented, specialising in the development, design, construction and operation of turnkey power plants and energy systems with ambitious goals within biomass-to-energy, waste-to-energy and hybrid solutions worldwide.
We deliver operation, maintenance and service of power plants. We have 700 dedicated employees, of which 400 are based at our headquarters in Allerød, Denmark.
Currently, we are constructing power plants in Belgium (Ghent), the Faroe Islands, the UK and the Caribbean. Furthermore, we service and operate power plants in the UK, Panama, Kenya, Sri Lanka, several islands in the Caribbean and a number of West African countries.

BWSC who is the operator of Ghent Biomass CHP plant is seeking suitably qualified and experienced personnel.

Job description

  • Operate the fuel handling and by-product plants with respect to safety, environmental and operational limits at all times, whilst maximising availability, reliability and efficiency.
  • Carry out day to day duties, including but not limited to routine Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and vehicle pre-use checks, fuel handling routines, plant inspections and ensure all on-site traffic management and weighbridge systems are operational.
  • Undertake all required loading and unloading activities for general site deliveries, including fuel, by-products and all plant and office deliveries.
  • Carry out periodic checking of the fuel quality delivered to site, to ensure it remains within specification and to undertake as requested the monthly audit/stock take of the fuel held on site.
  • Provide operational support to the operations and maintenance teams to maximize plant performance and safety, particularly with regards general defect rectification, planned and first line reactive maintenance and fault finding.
  • Ensure all fuel handling defects/works/routines are recorded within the sites Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Provide support for all planned outages as required, which may require periods of standard ‘Day working’.
  • Adhere to health, safety and environmental management policies and assist in the creation/development of all site operations procedures, so they remain accurate, suitable and sufficient.
  • Adhere to all Company Policies & Procedures (including but not limited to) those specified in the Employment Handbook, Health & Safety Policy, Integrated Management System and any financial/accounting systems.
  • Carrying out responsibilities as authorized and as defined within the companies safety rules and associated procedures.


Safety first
  • Applicants will, ideally, have experience in power plant or power plant related operations ie boiler, combustion systems, high pressure steam and water systems, steam turbines, water treatment etc.
  • Knowledge of biomass handling or waste to energy is also very relevant.
  • Knowledge and experience of the safe operation of mobile plant (Telehandler, Forklift etc) will be a distinct advantage.
  • Applications are particularly welcome from people living within a 50 km radius of the plant or alternatively from those who are willing to relocate to the locality.
