COST - European CO-operation in Science and Technology - is a unique means for European researchers to jointly develop their own ideas and new initiatives across all scientific disciplines through trans-European networking of nationally funded research activities.
Based on a European intergovernmental framework, COST has contributed since its creation in 1971 to closing the gap between science, policy makers and society throughout Europe and beyond. COST mission is to enable break-through scientific developments leading to new concepts and products and thereby contributing to strengthen Europe’s research and innovation capacities.
The COST Association is an international non-profit association based in Brussels with 36 European Member Countries; it integrates governance, management and support functions dedicated to COST activities aiming at enabling trans-European science and technology cooperation. The COST Association draws its funding from the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020, through specific Grant Agreements signed in the frame of a framework Partnership Agreement with the European Commission.

Job description

Position Responsibilities
  • The Communications Officer primary responsibility is to develop and implement a Pan-European media strategy and to support the COST Actions in their communication and dissemination activities (communication stewardship). the development of the communication strategy with a focus on media relations and and to help implement the integrated communication plan. The Communications Officer reports directly to the Head of Communications.
 
This position will involve:
 
  • Development and implementation of a Pan-European media strategy. The objective is to increase media presence and awareness about the COST programme in Europe.
  • Establishment of media relations and partnerships, writing of news and press releases, media monitoring
  • Establishing brand and communication stewardship among COST Actions.
  • Driving a communication stakeholder network of COST Actions, regrouping all communication responsible actors of ongoing COST Actions.
  • Ensuring the consistency and coherence of COST messaging and visual identity across all corporate and
  • Define a content strategy teaming up with the other colleagues in the unit and watch over its successful implementation in all relevant media.
  • Generation of content (e.g. success stories, interviews, articles) for press releases, newsletters and corporate communication channels. Identification of potential story opportunities based on COST Actions in close collaboration with Science Operations and other internal or external stakeholders.
  • Managing agencies, freelancers and other suppliers and handle the administration related to the above-mentioned responsibilities.
  • Realisation of corporate and multimedia presentations for management.
  • Endorsing other responsibilities and tasks as necessary for the good organisation of the office, as mandated by the COST Association Director.

Profile

Profile and Competencies
 
Candidates should demonstrate the following competencies:
 
  • Education & Experience
  • Master Degree preferably in Journalism, Marketing, Communications and/or Public Relations
  • Recognised minimum 6 years’ experience in communication, preferably in a science or European Affairs based environment, with a strong focus on media
  • A strong added value is the knowledge of the European Research and Innovation policy, landscape and agenda. Familiarity with national research structures, institutions and stakeholders.
  • High standard of spoken and written English, knowledge of other European languages appreciated.
  • Specific Competencies
  • Proven and demonstrable experience of drafting, editing and producing texts, articles and publications
  • Excellent oral and writing, grammar and editing skills; critical attention to detail
  • Proven and demonstrable competencies in working with a wide range of media, preparing press releases and press conferences, social media platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), etc.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office systems, web 2.0 tools, desktop publishing software (Adobe Illustrator or InDesign)
  • Other Competencies

  • Excellent organisational skills, continuous commitment to efficiency, accountability
  • Good inter-personal skills and communication skills within a multi-national context, including diplomacy, discretion and confidentiality

  • Flexibility and adaptability to the changing environment
  • Positive, initiative taking, get it done attitude

Offer

The COST Association offers
  • A full-time contract under the Belgian law
  • Start date: October 2018 (or earlier, if possible)
  • A European working environment located in Brussels
  • Unless a national of the ‘EU and EEE’, candidates must be eligible to work in Belgium and must have a work permit
